We’re looking forward to teaching at Herbstalk again this year!
History of Herbalism in the U.S.
Saturday June 6th 2015, 2:00pm – 3:30pm
The practice of herbalism in the United States is substantially different from other industrialized nations, where it is oftentimes more widely accepted and integrated into conventional medical practice – but also, more strictly regulated and controlled. Looking at the history of herbalism in the US teaches us not only where our art has come from, but also gives us hints of what to watch out for if we want to preserve the freedoms we have, while building popular interest and utilization of these methods. We’ll cover the early history of herbal medicine in the US in broad strokes, and devote particular attention to the periods when herbalism was the primary form of healthcare for the majority of the population, when it was driven underground, and how its resurgence in the last few decades has brought us to the present moment.
Herbalism as Street Medicine
Sunday June 7th 2015, 11:00am – 12:30pm
Street medicine includes providing medical support for protests and other direct political actions, working with underserved populations in a walk-in or mobile clinic, and acting as a first responder in urban emergency situations. Herbalism is a perfect complement to basic first aid skills in these environments, often proving more effective – and certainly more accessible – than conventional pharmaceutical treatments. In this class we’ll discuss some of the most common issues which arise in a street medicine context and how to address them from an herbalist’s perspective. We’ll highlight a few particularly useful, abundant, local plants for wound care, psychological/emotional first aid, and infection control. If time permits, we’ll also talk about urban wildcrafting and guerrilla gardening.
In addition to teaching, we’ll have a table set up – stop by and say hello!
