Weekly Schedule

Each week we will determine the schedule for live/synchronous time and convey it to you, by email or during our sessions. The most common schedule for Zoom sessions is Tuesday & Thursday, 2:00 – 5:00pm (US Eastern time), but this is subject to change as needed. (A frequent change is this: if we have students on rotation residing in East or Southeast Asia, this will shift to 4:00 – 7:00pm US Eastern Time instead.)

We may also plan time for herb walks to work on plant identification, harvesting, etc. These will usually take place from 12:00 – 3:00pm. We will plan for these outings based on the weather and the living situation of our cohort (i.e., whether most are local to the city).

There will be days each week on which we don’t meet for live time. Throughout rotation, you are expected to complete coursework in our online learning platform, as well as written and experiential homework, required reading and several projects. The asynchronous days are intended to be time for you to work on these things. You are expected to present your work every week for review and comments.

Additional time may be scheduled, if needed.

Your schedule for this rotation may seem lighter than that of other rotations. We want you to have time to think and experience – we encourage you to spend extra time outdoors, thinking about what you’re learning, reading, studying, journaling, observing plants, etc. We encourage you to spend time outdoors in all types of weather!

Homework assignments for each week are listed on the main APPE page.

Remember that you are expected to work at least 40 hours per week.

Make sure to take the time to explore your project work fully!

Use our resources list as the starting point for your internet research. Spend time each week reading articles at these websites, and following the links you find there. This is the best place to begin when searching for information about your Herb of the Fortnight or other subjects in herbalism.

Free Clinic

It is not required, but strongly recommended, that you attend our Free Clinic events if & when they occur during your rotation. This is a chance to see us in active consultation with clients, observe the process, and participate in helping us bring our services to people who have limited resources. We’ll talk about this during live sessions when a Free Clinic event is approaching.

Failure

In experiential learning, the only failure is failure to try. If you attempt to make a medicine and it molds, you have still learned. If you attempt to make a dietary change and you fail, you have still learned. Any attempt, as long as it is earnest, will progress your learning.

As long as you make honest effort, you will not be judged negatively for any failures. If your project does not turn out the way you expect, or if your dietary/sleep/lifestyle changes do not succeed, don’t try to cover it up! Make your good-faith, full-effort attempts, and if they don’t all turn out, bring us your failures. Together we will discuss what there is to learn from the experience!

Please tell me about any factors which may impact your performance. I can only help you mitigate them, or make allowances for them, if I am aware of them.
