This week we’re featuring Elecampane, Inula helenium.
You might know Elecampane as a respiratory support herb – and i gotta say, it’s one of the most important ones in my practice. If i had to choose one and only one herb for respiratory support, it would be Elecampane! It’s really the “swiss army knife” of respiratory herbs – it helps make coughing more productive so you can cough less often (it’s expectorant AND anti-tussive!), it helps strengthen the lungs so you can breathe easier, and it’s got quorum sensing inhibition actions – otherwise known as a “biofilm buster”.
But that’s not all it can do!
Elecampane also helps digestive health – it’s one of the few warming bitters, which helps a sluggish digestive system. It’s also got lots of inulin, which is an insoluble fiber that our microbiome uses as food. (That’s where the latin name comes from!) This only works if you take it in decoction, or eat the root – you won’t get this effect from a tincture. But it’s worth it, especially if you’re working on improving your microbiome health.
Elecampane has a lot of emotional benefits too – especially in situations of grief, or making shifts in our lives that are challenging, scary, or uncomfortable. Think about it as “breathing life into the change you want to/must make” – it’s a poetic way of thinking about it, but when we’re talking about emotional actions, poetry can be very helpful!
