Ground Ivy Wallpaper, Glechoma hederacea

Check out these Ground Ivy wallpaper images we made for you!

This week we’re featuring Ground Ivy, Glechoma hederacea, also known regionally as Creeping Charlie, Alehoof, Gill-over-the-ground – and more! It’s such a common weed in gardens that most gardeners know it – and find it annoying. But this herb is so important, you’re never going to be annoyed again, in fact, i bet you’ll start welcoming it in your garden!

Ground Ivy is my #1 most important herb for ear problems. Whether it’s an ear infection, congestion, tinnitus, itchiness – whatever is going on in your ears, Ground Ivy can help. Don’t put it directly into the ears – take it as tincture orally instead. If you want to work with it topically, you can rub the tincture in all around the ear as a liniment.

Its foundational mechanism of action here is that Ground Ivy helps move the lymphatic fluids in the head. This is why it can be helpful for such a variety of unrelated ear problems – not because it’s magically suited to all of them, but because most of them have a fluid dynamic component, and that’s what Ground Ivy is stimulating. Plus, a lot of your immune response is centered in lymphatic fluids – so that’s another factor in dealing with ear infections.

That’s a key factor in helping with Seasonal Allergies too – especially if you’re dealing with congestion in the sinuses.

That’s not all though – Ground Ivy is an essential part of my headache tool kit. If you have a tendency towards stagnation headaches: your head feels heavy and throbbing and dull and pounding (but not ice-pick-stabby), then Ground Ivy is very likely to help with your headache! Again, it’s about moving the fluids that are creating that stagnant pressure. Ground Ivy also has some relaxant qualities, so if your headache has these aspects and also tension, definitely give it a try.

Typically, Ground Ivy is made into tincture. It’s not the most delicious of the Mint Family herbs, and although now you can dry anything anytime anywhere with a dehydrator, that wasn’t so possible in the past, and early spring isn’t a great time for drying herbs, so tincture is much more convenient. Often i tincture Ground Ivy in brandy, because this is an herb that is so helpful for kids, and they prefer the softer flavor of brandy over vodka (or, they dislike it less!).

The best time to harvest is when the flowers are full and beautiful, and depending on where you are in the country, that’s now or coming up shortly. If you’ve got it in your garden and you’re clearing it out to plant – don’t compost it, tincture it! 🙂
