This week we’re featuring Ashwagandha, Withania somnifera, which is a popular adaptogen. People associate it with physical endurance and energy – so would it surprise you if i tell you that Ashwagandha can help you sleep?
My favorite way to think about Ashwangadha is in relation to cycles & circadian rhythm. One big factor in feeling run down and low-energy is that our current culture really disrupts our natural cycles and rhythms – the ones that our bodies expect and set our inner clocks to, and the ones that help our bodies sleep well and solidly.
A great example of this is Daylight Savings Time – you know how your body feels out of whack for a few days after the time changes? Your sleep gets all weird and you’re hungry at the wrong times? And oh, the pets… they definitely don’t get the whole time change thing!
That’s a modern impact on cycles and rhythms that you feel super obviously. But you might not notice how strong the impact of electricity is on your body! So much of our lives happen after dark in our culture, but that’s not what our bodies are expecting. The way we work and move and eat and sleep all are impacted by our culture, and a lot of that impacts our hormonal cycles in ways that we might not be aware of but we can definitely feel – often we feel them as energy cycles that are out of whack: tired when it’s inconvenient and wide awake when it’s time to sleep.
Ashwagandha helps us deal better to these kinds stresses – and can even help us shift back towards rhythms that work better for our bodies. Instead of thinking of it as an adaptogen that give us energy, i like to think of it as helping to be awake when i’m supposed to be awake and get to sleep when i’m supposed to get to sleep. It helps with both sides of the day!
Ashwagandha isn’t perfect for everyone! It’s warming and drying, so if you already run hot and you’re dry and tense already, this is not the best choice of adaptogen for your constitution. But if you tend to be cold and damp – you retain water or you are a little “puffy” – and you’re looking for an herb to help you both deal with stress better and get your circadian rhythm back in a comfortable place, then it’s definitely worth trying!
Also, Ashwagandha is a nightshade, so if you have a nightshade sensitivity, a different adaptogen will be a better choice.
Because of the impact Ashwangadha can have on the entire hormonal cascade – and here i’m not talking so much about reproductive hormones as i am about things like melatonin and cortisol: the big hormones that regulate those daily cycles – the effects can ripple out into many systems of the body and impact lots of different aspects of health. Ashwagandha can be a really helpful herb across many different issues when dysregulated sleep schedules and circadian rhythm are an aspect of what someone is experiencing – and it’s best to think about it in those terms instead of thinking about a whole laundry list of what Ashwagandha is “good for” – because the work it’s doing is at that lower, foundational level.
