Bee Balm Wallpaper, Monarda fistulosa

Check out these Bee Balm wallpaper images we made for you!

This week we’re featuring Bee Balm, Monarda fistulosa (also didyma), whose blooms always make me think of fireworks. You might also know this plant as Wild Bergamot, though it’s not actually related to Bergamot, which is a citrus fruit.

Monarda is one of the most potent Mint family plants, with particularly strong anti-microbial action. That action works on contact – so when we’re thinking about how to work with it, we’re always thinking about how to get into contact with the microbes we want to fight.

For wound care, that could be a wound wash made from strong Monarda tea, and you can make salve with Mondara, too.

For respiratory infections, steam is the best way to work with it – that anti-microbial action gets directly to the lungs when you breathe it in. Monarda also warms up the lungs so that they’re not a good environment for pathogens to survive in.

That warming action isn’t limited to just the lungs – taken as tea, the warming, pungent, and somewhat bitter flavors of Monarda create a lovely digestive stimulating action. Since most bitters are cooling, it’s exciting to have a warming option for folks who need digestive bitters and have a cold, sluggish system.

And, it’s a self-seeding perennial, so once you get it started, you’ll have a sea of these gorgeous flowers for years to come – which is great, because it’s a favorite food for hummingbirds, bees, and other pollinators!

But that’s not all! Learn more about working with Mondarda:

And naturally, Monarda is featured in our Materia Medica course, where you’ll learn over 100 of the most important herbs in our practice!
