This week we’re featuring Calamus, Acorus calamus.

Calamus, along with Rose from last week, is our herbal theme for 2025 – so let’s take a look at why it’s so great:

Usually, the first thing folks learn about Calamus is that it helps digestion – and it does! But that’s just barely scraping the surface.

When i think about Calamus, i’m really thinking about the parasympathetic nervous system. That’s the “rest and digest” part of our nerve function, as opposed to the sympathetic nervous system, or the “fight or flight” part. They should definitely have names that are not so similar!

A big part of the parasympathetic nervous system is the vagus nerve, which is a super long nerve (it’s actually a pair of nerves: right side and left side) that starts at the brain and travels down through the trunk of the body, communicating with your organs, especially the heart, lungs, and digestive system. This creates a feedback loop so that our brains can tell our organs when we’re safe and can relax, but also so that our organs can tell our brains if things are going ok, too.

But these days, the parasympathetic nervous system is – for many people – often not actually ok! There’s a lot of stress going on, and if you’ve ever wondered why your guts go a little haywire when you feel stressed out, the parasympathetic nervous system and specifically the vagus nerve is why.

Calamus helps relax the whole system. It’s able to give us a feeling of groundedness and safety, and helps to relax us into a head space that’s good for meditation and good decision making. It’s warming and antispasmodic, and brings calm into the body: actually literally! Imagine that long nerve just radiating calmness down through all the parts of your trunk.

Calamus plays a prominent role in digestive health but because of this parasympathetic action, it’s helpful in lots of other ways too – you can find them:

And naturally, Calamus is featured in our Materia Medica course, where you’ll learn over 100 of the most important herbs in our practice!
