This week we’re featuring Catnip, Nepeta cataria.

When we think about Catnip, we usually think about — cats, right? But did you know this is a SUPER helpful plant for humans too?

My favorite time to turn to Catnip is when there are hard emotions rising up out of the gut. Whether that’s anxiety rising up like a bunch of angry butterflies or turning into full on nausea… Or if you are feeling fear deep in your gut and it’s starting to impact your ability to think straight… Or if you’re feeling threatened, or just that kind of uneasy feeling where it seems like something is wrong but it’s not something you can really articulate… Or when you’re feeling restlessness you can’t explain and it’s preventing you from being able to focus…

All of these are excellent times for Catnip! It settles those upward rising feelings of discomfort back down into something more manageable.

Not only that, but it’s helpful for digestive health too – which is handy, because those kind of rising emotions of doom tend to bring digestive upset with them! Whether you’re dealing with nausea, heartburn, “wuggy guts”, or that swarming feeling in your stomach that doesn’t really have a name – these are all things Catnip can help with. I often pair it with Chamomile in digestive formulas, because Catnip soothes all those problems with that kind of upward movement, and Chamomile soothes the lower digestive problems, especially intestinal cramping, or when you feel like your gut is twisted up in knots.

But that’s not all!! Catnip is helpful in lots of other ways too – you can find them:

And naturally, Catnip is featured in our Materia Medica course, where you’ll learn over 100 of the most important herbs in our practice!
