This week we’re featuring Goldenrod, Solidago spp., which is a super helpful herb in about a million ways – but many people think that it is a cause of seasonal allergies. It’s not! Goldenrod is bee-pollinated (and lots of other pollinators love it too, like butterflies!) – its pollen is too heavy to be carried in the air, which means it’s not the reason you’re sneezing. But, Goldenrod CAN help fight seasonal allergies – that’s one of its super powers! Most of the time you hear that attributed to its ability to support the kidneys, and that does help a lot. But did you know that Goldenrod also helps keep your mucous membranes healthy – not too drippy, not too dry!

Goldenrod doesn’t just do this in the nose – but through all of your mucosa, which is more of your body than you might think! Goldenrod has vulnerary action to the entire endothelium, which is the lining of your digestive tract, blood vessels, and most organs. This is why Goldenrod can be very helpful for folks with digestive irritation, like the damage in the esophagus caused by heart burn and GERD, in the stomach lining caused by ulcers, or in the intestines because of Crohn’s, ulcerative colitis, IBS, etc. All of these situations involve damage to that mucosal lining, and Goldenrod can help repair it!

The ability to repair the endothelium also means lowering baseline inflammation throughout the body. Inflammation is like a fire alarm: it goes off when there’s damage that needs to be repaired. Any herb that can help repair damage to the lining of your digestive tract, blood vessels, and other organs means that you can get that fire alarm turned off faster and reduce the effects that unresolved inflammation causes.

And this might give us insight to the ways that Goldenrod supports mental and emotional health too. I think of Goldenrod in times when life feels like a marathon of muck: just day in, day out, the same exhausting drudgery, the same depressing stress, the same feeling of no options and no escape. Have you ever been there? Maybe it’s because of a job you hate but you’re stuck in, or a bad relationship, or – well these days, all of the everything going on in the world. When you’re in that place, it’s pretty awful – but this is exactly the place where Goldenrod helps best! And i wonder if its ability to reduce systemic inflammation could be a way it does this – especially given what they’ve been learning about the connections between high baseline inflammation and depression & anxiety.

Regardless of the mechanism, it works! I’ve turned to Goldenrod this way so many times and i’ve seen it help lots of other people this way too!

But wait – there’s more! Goldenrod makes an excellent muscle rub for when you’re sore or injured, it helps with UTIs, it works wonders for PMS that is slow and stagnant, especially when there’s a depression component, and more! Plus, its beautiful late-season blooms help pollinators get that extra boost to help them survive through the winter. There are a wide variety of Goldenrod species and as far as i have tried, all of them are medicinally active.
