Hawthorn Wallpaper, Crataegus spp.

Check out these Hawthorn wallpaper images we made for you!

This week we’re featuring Hawthorn, Crataegus spp. (“spp.” means that there’s more than one species that we work with, in this case, Crataegus monogyna, Crataegus oxyacantha, and others)

You may have learned about Hawthorn for cardiovascular health – it’s often one of the first “heart herbs” that people learn – because it really is that important for supporting the heart.

This is true both emotionally and physiologically: Hawthorn nourishes the heart itself and provides nutrients for the walls of the blood vessels, so that they can stay healthy. When we think about the cardiovascular system, we think about blood moving through the body, but often we forget – the heart and the vessels are also organs and they need to be fed too! They can’t just be taking care of everyone else and getting no care for themselves – uh oh. Does that sound familiar?

Hawthorn is a prime herb for people who are caretakers. Whether you’re raising kids, caring for elders, caring for those in your community, or even if you’re the team or office “mom” – the person everyone goes to when they need help. Caretakers also need care!

And here’s a fun tidbit that you might not know: Hawthorn berries are the highest source of pectin i know. If you make syrup with fresh berries it’s going to gel up as if you added double pectin to it – but it does that all by itself. It gets really gloppy! And you know who loves that? Your friendly gut microbes – pectin is a pre-biotic fiber! So if you’ve been taking Hawthorn syrup for your heart, you didn’t know it but you’ve been helping your guts too!
