Heather Wallpaper, Calluna vulgaris

Check out these Heather wallpaper images we made for you!

This week we’re featuring Heather, Calluna vulgaris, which is an herb i truly can’t live without!

Before i jump in to why i love Heather so much, i wanted to mention some of its relatives, because the Heather botanical family (Ericacea) has a lot of fantastic herbs in it, like Uva-Ursi, Cranberry, Blueberry, and Ghost Pipe! The plants in this family prefer poor, acidic soil with a high sand percentage, and build strong mycorrhizal networks to help them get nutrients.

But if you take all that garden-advice kind of language and rewrite it a little bit, you could also say that these are plants that survive in stressful environments by building supportive connections within their communities. These plants are literally modeling mutual aid! (If you’re interested in learning more about building supportive networks of mutual aid in your own community, grab our free Mutual Aid Startup Guide here!)

Heather’s beautiful little purpley-pink flowers are actually tremendously powerful. They’re strongly diuretic – which means much more than “makes you pee”. It’s true, that is the end result – but the actual important part is: where did all that fluid come from? Diuretic herbs don’t just “go right through you”, and you pee out the same amount you took in – instead, they are actually performing complex fluid management throughout the body.

In Heather’s case, the areas it targets most are the legs and lower trunk, the kidneys, and the heart – the places where poor circulation and poor lymphatic movement combine to cause problems! Heather helps sqeeze out that extra fluid and help get it out of the body.

But it doesn’t just do this physiologically. I mean, it does do it physiologically and really if you just have one cup of Heather tea (it’s delicious by the way), you’ll know for sure what i mean. Pro tip: don’t drink Heather right before bed!

Heather does exactly this same work emotionally as well. When there are heavy, wet, bogged down emotions, Heather is one of the best helpers. I find it so soothing, to just have that heaviness carried away and drained out. It helps me feel like i can get moving again!
