Lungwort Wallpaper, Pulmonaria officinalis
Check out these Lungwort wallpaper images we made for you!
This week we’re featuring Lungwort, Pulmonaria officinalis, which is one of the very first flowers to pop up here in the spring. Often blooming in the snow, it’s one of the cheeriest harbingers of spring!
Lungwort is – on one hand – a fairly specific herb: it helps with respiratory problems!
But on the other hand – its actions are such that even though we usually think of it as “just a respiratory herb”, it actually can help in lots of different situations! (This is why it’s so important to learn not just what an herb is “good for”, but also its energetics and actions – because herbs can do more than we think!)
Pulmonaria is a moistening herb that also has tannins – and that’s not super common! It’s been extensively studied not just for respiratory issues, but also for general anti-inflammatory actions, which would carry over nicely to the digestive system especially if you’re working with the tea.
There’s also been a surprising amount of study with Pulmonaria with regard to neuroprotective actions and Alzheimer’s! This is not an action that i have explored actively yet, however, i do wonder if my sometimes craving for Pulmonaria coincides with nervous system actions that are happening for me. The world of herbalism is inexhaustible: no matter how much you know, there is always more to study!
On a much simpler note, Lungwort is very helpful in formulation – it’s got a broad, agreeable flavor that helps soften strong bitter flavors, or hot flavors like Oregano. It lends moistening action to drying blends, and is an excellent general support in formulas that are hot or sharp.
Pulmonaria is like the herb friend who helps everyone get along, and who cleans up after everyone. It’s an herb that is usually just tossed in the “lungs” box, but it can do so much more!
Learn more about working with Pulmonaria:
- In relation to the respiratory illness and formulation in the Respiratory Health course
- In relation to managing the symptoms of colds & flu in the Cold & Flu course
- In relation to managing grief and sadness in the Working with Grief course
- and in the future once i’ve done more experimentation, Pulmonaria will have a place in the Neurological & Emotional Health course too!
