This week we’re featuring Nettle, Urtica dioica, which sits in the pivot point between heart health and stress management. Well for that matter, it sits in the pivot point between lots of health issues – Nettle is the swiss army knife of herbalism!

Nettle is one of those plants that seems “too good to be true”, because it seems like it can help with everything. On one hand, yes! You should be suspicious when you see that! But on the other hand, Nettle really CAN help with nearly everything. So let’s dig into some mechanisms of action that can help explain that!

Let’s start with stress: when we’re stressed, we use up our mineral reserves much faster. There’s a whole section on how this works in the Neurological & Emotional Health course, but the super short version is that our nervous system requires certain minerals in order to decide which messages to pay attention to and which messages can be ignored. When we run low on minerals, our ability to filter out messages degrades and the result is feeling overwhelmed. There are other mechanisms for how Nettles helps with stress management too – for example, it has anti-inflammatory properties that can free up cortisol so that we can use that cortisol to deal with the impacts of stress, and it can help to make sure that inflammatory processes don’t spiral out of control, for example, in an MCAS flare up.

Nettle also helps with heart health via multiple mechanisms. First, because your heart also requires minerals to function properly, and if stress is using those minerals up (or if your diet is just low in minerals – or both), there’s less available for your heart! But also, Nettle improves kidney function, and helps move lymph and interstitial fluids – in other words, reducing overall fluid pressure in the body. And the anti-inflammatory actions come into play here too, because less baseline inflammation means less inflammatory load on the vasculature.

Nettle is best as a long infusion, because that’s how you’ll get the most nutrient content from it. But because it can move all that fluid around and out of your body, Nettle can be drying. That’s fine for someone who has too much fluid, maybe for someone with edema or who just carries a lot of water weight. But if you’re a person who already feels dry much of the time, Nettle by itself will probably not feel fantastic over the long term – so it’s time to blend it up! Consider Linden, which is lovely and moistening, and a great stress reducer!
