This week we’re featuring Sumac, Rhus typhina.
You might know Sumac as a culinary herb – it’s tangy and vibrant, and blends well into za’atar and other Middle Eastern spice blends. It’s great on nearly anything – meat, fish, vegetables, even rice dishes. And it makes sense to include it into foodways – it’s packed with vitamin C and the same sorts of anti-inflammatory actions that all red berries have, because of their bioflavonoid content.
But it’s not just for cooking!
Those anti-inflammatory actions make Sumac a very important herb for cardiovascular support, especially in repairing the kinds of damage that occurs in the blood vessels after a covid infection. It makes a tasty, lemonade-like drink that you can enjoy alone, or paired with other cardiovascular supporting herbs like Hibiscus and Goji.
Sumac is also very helpful in cold & flu situations – and here it’s both the berry and the leaf. Most people are familiar with Elderberry in the context of cold & flu, but Sumac’s action is very similar – and Sumac grows in many places that Elderberry does not, so it can be a much more cost-effective option. The leaves have the additional benefit of the astringency, which is helpful in a drippy-nose kind of situation.
