Yarrow Wallpaper, Achillea millefolium
Check out these Yarrow wallpaper images we made for you!
This week we’re featuring Yarrow, Achillea millefolium, which is often referred to as “battlefield medicine” or “warrior medicine” – and i think that’s apt!
The latin name comes from the myth of Achilles – the invincible warrior warrior who fought in the Trojan wars. Because of protection his mother created for him, every part of his body was impervious to harm with the exception only of a small part of the back of his ankle – the achilles tendon.
Why did they give it this name? Because Yarrow is a super hero of wound care: it can staunch bleeding, prevent infection in wounds, and help them heal. One old “herban legend” you often hear repeated though – to put Yarrow directly into the wound – isn’t actually a great idea. Even if it’s an herb, foreign material in a wound is a physical irritant and will still need to be removed; i prefer working with strong infusions of Yarrow as a wound wash or Yarrow hydrosol.
Yarrow is a hero in so many other ways though – so don’t just leave it in your first aid kit!
Yarrow can help improve circulation and clear out stagnation. That includes bruises by the way, whether they are caused by injury or by poor circulation. Yarrow is excellent at fever management and has aromatic oils that help a respiratory infection as a steam. Yarrow is one of my favorites for skin care, especially as an infused facial oil or a hydrosol – it can help to reduce puffiness and smooth wrinkles.
Yarrow is an excellent aid in fighting a UTI – the volatile oils are excreted via the urinary system and retain their antiseptic action all the way out. Yarrow is also helpful for menstrual issues – both for easing heavy bleeding and for improving stagnant flow.
And Yarrow is a true hero in the realm of emotional health. When you are going into a difficult situation and you need some emotional armor, Yarrow can help you feel strong. But not all armor is external: sometimes you need to fight the same old demons you’ve been carrying around and not gotten free of – feelings of unworthiness, of deep hurt, of shame. Yarrow can help clear out these stagnant, hurtful emotions so that you can stand taller.
